Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shain - EOW July 2, 1860

Deputy Shain was shot and killed while investigating a recent rash of robberies. He had interviewed a farm owner and was searching the nearby area when he located a man feeding several horses. As he talked to the man he recognized a brand on one of the horses and attempted to place the man under arrest. The suspect produced a revolver and fatally shot Deputy Shain.

Deputy Shain had served with the Collin County Sheriff's Office for 2 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

Deputy Sheriff William C. Hall - EOW April 24, 1869

Deputy Hall was shot and killed as he and several other posse members attempted to arrest three men on a murder warrant. As the deputies approached the scene the suspects opened fire on them from a hiding place in the bushes. Two of the suspects were shot and killed in the return gunfire and the third suspect escaped.

Deputy Hall had served with the Collin County Sheriff's Office for 3 years. He was survived by his wife.

Chief Deputy Brakefield was killed in an automobile accident on FM 2514. His patrol car left the roadway and overturned in a culvert. He was thrown from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.

Chief Deputy Brakefield had served with the agency for 2 years. He was survived by his wife, three children, and three grandchildren.

Sheriff Joseph Steenbergen - EOW Feb. 5, 1985

Date of Incident: July 1, 1984

Sheriff Steenbergen succumbed to injuries sustained 7 months earlier when his patrol car was struck by another car that failed to yield right of way at FM 2514 and FM 2551. Sheriff Steenbergen was transported to a local hospital where he remained for the next seven months before being released home. He died two days after returning home.

Sheriff Steenbergen had served as sheriff for 5 years and was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Incident Details

Cause of Death: Residential Fire

Date of Incident: February 10, 2013

Deputy Fields and his wife perished in their home in the early morning hours of Feb. 10th, 2013. It is suspected a severe storm moving through the area produced lightning that struck of unknown area around the Fields' residence. Their home subsequently caught fire. Deputy Fields and his wife, Rebecca, died at the scene.

Deputy Fields and Rebecca was survived by their children and grandchildren.
